The National Revolutionary Army, or Socialist China, the Socialist Federation of China, or Red China, is a minor faction in the background of Blue Alert 3 Paradox, and will be featured throughout the campaign, and will be present in many skirmish maps and as a potential subfaction for the Communist International

Background

China's politicial situation in the wake of Sun Yat Sen's death was quite complicated to say the least. The Guomindang initially sought close relationships with the Soviet Union before Sun Yat Sen's death and replacement by the anti-communist Chaing Kai Sek lead to an empowerment of the right wing faction of the GMD. At first the Communists were hounded by Kai Sek who wished to destroy them and end their influence, and the influence of the warlords rife througout China, but their fortunes changed dramatically in 1933 when America underwent its second revolution in response to a putsch attempt by MacArthur. The new Union of American Socialist Republics was keen on spreading governments friendly to itself and its ideals across the world. Between the pressure that America and the Soviet Union could exert, the rightist faction in the GMD found itself out of a house and home as the Comintern's support poured into China, supporting not only the communist party but the leftist faction of the Guomindang and other leftist movements in China.

By 1935, Chiang Kai Sek found himself outmaneuvered and replaced by Wang Jingwei, leader of the socialist faction of the Guomindang who sought close relations with the Soviet Union and America. Not everyone agreed to this, and the rightist portion of the party split off and joined with Anti-Communist warlords and fled to the arms of the capitalist powers in western Europe. But the tables had been decisively turned as Wang Jingwei found himself awash with resources from the Comintern that went into developing his country first and to the military second. Jingwei perhaps naively adopted the stance that if he could raise the living standards of the parts of China he had established his rule of law over; the splinter faction; which now exclusively romanized its name as Kuomintang, would give up their resistance peacefully.

Still, he made sure to gradually grind the Kuomintang into the dirt, his red Chinese forces sweeping aside the outmatched blue Chinese when they decided to engage them. Declaring a Socialist Federation of China in 1940, everything seemed to be going well for the new China as it established relationships with new comintern member state Iran and engaged in lucrative trade with communist countries in Latin America as well as the Soviet Union and American Republics proper. By 1945, the Socialist Federation of China was universally recognized as the third power of the communist international and was awash with prestige and development; though Blue China, the so called National Republic of China, was growing increasingly developed as well even as they were being pushed to their last strongholds in southern China.

Jingwei had some reason to be concerned, with the very hostile ring of European colonies to his south, Alliance aligned Korea and the Island of Totania to his east, the enigmatic islands of Japan also to his east, and his country focused on infrastructure and reform rather than military matters. But he was convinced that it would be impossible for anyone to be crazy enough to outright go to war at this time. After all with three giants in the comintern and a league of allies, surely even the Alliance would think twice about starting a second world war? And even then, would the colonized people of southern Asia really wish to destroy his republic? Did he not provide an example of an Asian country prospering when freed from the grip of Europe?

His calculus of course, assumed that the blues would think like he did. He thought that the rhetoric of figures like Mosley and Bucard was at the heart of things, a lot of bluster and they were at heart cautious actors. He wasn't totally ignorant of the buildup that was facing him in an effort to save Jiang Jieshi's increasingly doomed seeming National Republic, but he certainly could have prepared more for what was to come than he did. Which left him in a poor position to resist the Alliance's onslaught when the first tanks came rolling over roads made through the Himalayas and the first ships appeared on his shores. He had expected perhaps some engagements with the Alliance of Free States, perhaps to chastise him for his support for anti-colonial movements in Asia and Africa, but he certainly didn't expect the sheer magnitude of the assault.

The Dragon battles for its life

The Alliance threw a shockingly huge force into China just as Wang prepared for the final offensives to crush Jiang Jieshi's nationalist republic once and for all. All across his southern borders he was met with a blue tide that his forces proved incapable of stopping; careful preparations by MI6 helping to disguise the build up to ensure the maximum possible effect as an invasion force numbering in the millions pushed northwards. Due to years of focus on peaceful development and not taking the threat as seriously as he should have, the Socialist Federation of China found itself beset and under siege. Huge hordes of Sepoys and other colonial troops as well as forces from the white colonies of Britain in the southern Hemisphere swept aside the Chinese forces like a tidal wave and penetrated deep into Chinese territory.

Overnight, Jiang Jieshi's forces went from a barely viable tinpot regime on the verge of collapse before the final assault to controlling an increasingly large share of China and with the Comintern embattled on so many fronts, it was hard to get the Chinese the support they needed as part of Mosley's grand strategy of divide and conquer. This meant an adoption of "war-socialism" was absolutely necessary and the GMD would need to turn to all of its allied parties, including the likes of the Communist Party and the International Worker's Party; to help drum up all the support they could to "the patriotic defense of our revolution, the freedom of the workers of the world, and our very motherland from these Imperialist bandits."

The Chinese people under Jingwei rallied even as they were beaten further and further back by the relentless invasion from the south and the east and Jieshi's forces grew larger and larger as he started drafting people towards his system; with promises of wealth and splendour and the end of Soviet-American influence in China. The North Chinese turned out in increasingly huge numbers to man the lines of defense as the grinding weight of the Alliance's advance only seemed to mount in force. But despite the brave defense of China against such overwhelming odds, the Chinese lines of defense seemed to at best slow down the blue tsunami. And for a time it seemed that even Beijing would fall.

But in the long dismissed Island of Japan, hope was on its way. Just as the Chinese forces began to rally against this two pronged foreign invasion, Japan joined the war on the side of the Comintern to contain what it saw as dangerous European expansion of influence in the pacific. The flood of Japanese troops hitting hard at Korea and Totania and also causing trouble in south east Asia and reinforcing the Red Chinese lines and even helping with counterattacks was vital, as was the freeing up of troops from the Soviet far East and Alaska. The siege of Beijing was lifted and a vicious counteroffensive swept through and reclaimed Manchuria and poured into the North of Korea to deal with the Alliance troops there as well as chastise the Totanians and driving them back to their island. Between the Japanese to the South and the Communists to the North, Mosley's backed Korean regime crumbled, splitting the peninsula into a revolutionary north and a vassalized south.

To the south, the counter attacks drove the Blues further and further south, their momentum lost as the comintern chased them. The incompetence and the corruption in the army had been weeded out by many hard years of war and trial by fire, the National Revolutionary Army would no longer be bullied by the capitalists. Alarmed by this development, Mosley urged more resources into the country to prevent a collapse of his ally and the potential end of European influence in Asia. Blackwatch troops and more flooded into the country along with the latest in gear such as Mammut tanks, spectrum weapons, Hawker and Cutlass jets, all while furiously telling Jieshi to mobilize more and more soldiers. Through this desperate act and Red China being a defensively oriented army, Jieshi's army was able to draw a line and halt further advances. With the technical end of the second world war, the Internationale and the Alliance both drew down their support in China to avoid sparking off world war three before world war two had even gotten cold, but now the civil war had entered a new and deadly phase.

Is it always Red vs Blue?

Though no longer trying to outdo each other with floods of troops into China, both the Alliance and the Comintern remained in opposition to one another in China, sending volunteer forces to try and tip the balance of the war to one side or the other. Being two members of their respective political blocs who had refused to sign a peace treaty with one another (as such would actually legitimize the other government) meant that they would prove a constant sore point in cold war relations between the two countries. As was their support of opposing groups outside the country during the cold war. The Socialist Federation of China was an ardent supporter of revolutionary movements in Asia, Africa, and to a lesser extent in Latin America alongside its close ally of the Worker's Republic of Korea; while the Nationalist Republic would use its hordes and syndicate money to prop up counter-revolutionary, right wing nationalist, or pro-colonial groups.

The ideals of Ernesto Zapata and his Zapatismo philosophy for socialist change in the developing world were inspiring to Red Chinese foreign policy. Meanwhile the dream of offensive deep battle as dreamed by the likes of Tuachevsky, Patton, Frunze, and Bradley started to wither and die; replaced by Defense in Depth and Bait and Bleed. Chinese support for revolution would be focused on defensive theory and bleeding an enemy force dry rather than going on the offense (something that one would typically seek Korean advice and aid for instead). Similarly, Red Chinese armies at the home front frequently came to rely on the support of other armies to help with making offensives though they tried their best to make the NRA self sufficient. However, going on the offensive was a difficult proposition as the Blue Chinese Strategy was to always maintain the initiative at any cost. So the school of defense grew more and more dominant in Red China's military thinking.

Epic defenses would be waged against similarly massive assaults as the increasingly developed and militarized halves of the brutalized country sought nothing less than one another's annihilation. Trench lines, fortifications, fortresses, supply dumps, factories and more were set up all across Chinese territory. More changes would come after the second world war as Jingwei announced he would not be running again for office, and so he would come to be replaced by a series of other officials who all tried to find their balance between China's foreign commitments and its commitment to stopping the blue tide from the south. They created a new great wall of China, meant to ensure that any attempted further assaults on the great bastion of socialism in the east would crash against an impenetrable wall of defenses. The people of China would be called to defend the gains of the revolution from the aggressors and all resources of the great Socialist Federation would be mobilized to ensure that China remain free under the red banner against the encroachment of the nationalist hordes.

Increasingly strange weapons would be continually developed as both sides desperately struggled for some kind of edge to break the ever growing deadlock. The Scientists of Jieshi's blue hordes would try and devise ever more elaborate means of trying to break the federation's lines while the federation would in turn craft increasingly strange means of holding the line against the enemy. To stretch their manpower dollar as far as they could go, they started to cyborgize the critically wounded, then the injured, then anyone who volunteered, then everyone they could. Men and women made more of metal than of flesh began to appear with growing frequency in the orders of North Chinese battle, who needed no sleep or rest and could fight seemingly without limit. To increase the destructive firepower of their forces, the Socialists created a weapon system derived from proton weapon technology known simply as the ray weapon to sweep away large formations of enemies all at once; and to ensure that there were always more resources they invented the scrambler to help change matter from one state to the other.

Some of the world's most impressive construction projects were began in Socialist china for the sole purpose of enhancing their bulwark against their enemies, creating spectacularly long ranged cannons build into mountains or even mountain sized bunkers to bombard their enemies almost anywhere while huge arrays of long ranged homing missile launchers were set up around the coast and in other strategic areas to protect their borders from the depredations of the navies of the capitalists or the Axis and Epsilon when the third world war came to be. One of the world's densest and most deadly air defense networks were erected; and increasingly efficient and automated factories and farm fields were created so that more and more labor could be freed up for war. The hope was that if they held out long enough and gradually retook land through creeping their fortifications forward, they could win and finally heal the wounds of China, but their eyes were always on swifter means of ending the war, and soon enough one would present itself to the Chinese.

Mushrooms and Fun

That something would fall from the sky and land in the yellow river during the third world war, and both sides quickly sent teams to investigate and bring back samples, leading to the discovery of the material's miraculous properties. Capable of self replication and easily fissionable to generate power or a hugely potent explosive, the material could also induce mutation or be utilized in a number of powerful radiological weapons. Naming the substance JADE, both factions quickly set about incorporating it into just about everything they could; beginning a nuclear revolution. But such a revolution would not be particularly long lived, as both realized that the powers of the substance could be used to create explosives of unimaginable power in a weight easily carried by practically sized bombers, shells, missiles, and even portable explosives such as detonation packs. Thus both sides frantically began to create munitions that used the power of nuclear fission to generate their power and loaded them into any container they could; then in the final tragic act of the third world war, just as peace was about to be signed between all sides, they gave the order. Bombers made their final flights, cannons fired their last shells, missile launchers released their last payloads; each with a JADE nuclear warhead, and the entire nation of China went alight in an inferno.

The horror went on for only a day, but it was the costliest day in human history as hundreds of millions perished in the inferno. Cities, soldiers, factories, bases, all were targeted and the sun disappeared from the skies over China; blocked out by ominous black clouds of energized dust and gas. Soot and ash in enough numbers to cause global temperatures to fall due to a reduction in the warm light of the sun rose high into the air, and the rain that fell upon the land afterwards was blackened and poisoned and the JADE particles in the air fell with the raid, creating massive fields of the poisonous crystals. Much of those who survived were twisted and altered into horrific and unrecognizable monsters; whether they were man, plant, or animal, and many of the survivors of the initial blasts would die of radiation poisoning or from starvation and thirst as agriculture grinded to a halt. Whether the Nationalists or the Socialists were the first to give the order or were the ones to retaliate or if there was just an unfortunate coincidence and both launched their attacks simultaneously was Immaterial, the China they had fought for had been essentially wiped off the map. Many of the survivors would flee elsewhere. Many blue Chinese refugees found themselves in places like Australia, Canada, South Africa, and Europe while red refugees began to settle in the safety of the Soviet Union, Argentina, the middle east, or America. In total China's population dropped by perhaps half in total from the bombings and the steady streams of refugees who settled anywhere they could.

However, there were survivors, many of them Red Chinese. Soon they began to emerge from the firestorm and looked around for orders to be given. They soon found that there were none; the majority of the higher ups had all perished. All that were left were small scale leaders such as the Chinese anarchists, regional commanders, lower ranking generals, theoreticians, local heads of one party or the other. Mau Yuan, a young party youth league member scarcely twenty years of age, declared a meeting of surviving leaders and requested a vote for a new leader take place, surprising everyone (him most of all) by his selection as the new premier of the federation. However he soon found that he would not be getting much in the way of rest for strange forces seemed to begin stirring in China almost immediately. To everyone's dismay, the Blue Chinese were still very much present; and many warlords and bandit kings had sprung up in the wasteland; with many surviving Socialist forces refusing to acknowledge Mau Yuan as their leader as they all sought to carve out their domains according to their own ideas of socialism or simply rule a place as warlords. Perhaps the mightiest of these warlords were the follows of Yan Xishan's ideals who carved out their own little empire in and around Shanxi and declared themselves to be the Yellow Chinese and offered invitations to the others.

The most threatening however, were the new Green Chinese. Emerging from parts unknown and styling themselves like the old Empires rather than some manner of republic, the Green Chinese came forth under the leadership of someone called the Viceroy who no one Yuan knew had ever heard of before or even seen. At first thought to be some plant by the Guardians of monarchy who were now parading around their pretender Emperor as the figure the Chinese must now follow since republicanism had "failed" them, the Viceroy soon proved to be no friends to the "White Chinese", the Blue Chinese or the Yellows, and struck out at all they could; quickly gathering an impossible arsenal of fantastical and strange (if impractical) weaponry with the intent of not just conquering China but also having revenge on the rest of the world. Declaring the Green Chinese to be enemies of the people, the remaining Socialists dug in as they always did as the Green Chinese picked off the various warlords they came across and sucked in talent and resources through their promises of shelter and food and vengeance and the disillusionment of many with the dreams of the other groups. And if that were not enough; strangeness seemed to draw itself to China like a magnet.

Now aware of the wonders of China, the other powers started pouring in to scavenge what they could and try to unlock the secrets of what had destroyed China or at least ensure that the threats in China stayed where they were as those around the nation became at risk of attacks by mutants, bandits, warlords, the Heart Washers, or the Greens themselves. Tibet seemed to disappear only for its people to re-emerge some months later as something very, very changed from who they once were, strange machines could be seen traversing the wastelands; the silver and purple monstrosities ignoring the radiation while beings from aircraft that seemed to descend from space began to pick through the rubble while evil shadowy creatures danced in the darkness and armies with never beforeseen uniforms marched around. With anarchy reigning in over much of China, it was now seen as something of a free for all as everyone either tried to take what they desired or to strike back against whatever attacked them there. It might have been overwhelming for the remnants of Red China, but there was a light in the darkness as the Comintern once again began to pour help to get China back on its feet, but it will be a long path before China can be mended.

The National Revolutionary Army

Units

IconKPA.png
Revolutionary Guard Armed with a bayonet equipped browning automatic rifle, Revolutionary Guard make up the bulk of the NRA's defensive lines and can hose down approaching enemies in long ranged lead from dug in positions.
IconKPA.png
Tank Hunter Armed with powerful 106mm anti-tank team operated recoilless rifles, Tank Hunters can damage both structures and stop tank advances in their tracks. Capable of setting up quick bunkers, the Tank Hunter can offer shelter for themselves and other infantry squads.
IconKPA.png
Falconer Using an anti-materiel rifle, sharpshooters are capable of putting holes in light vehicles (especially those that give their sides or rears) while of course; making messes out of infantry. They can load up special rounds that allow for greater armour penetration at the cost of damage, which can also pierce a single infantry unit to damage up to two targets at once.
IconKPA.png
130mm Piece Cyborgs carrying around a powerful 130mm field gun with them with ease beyond the abilities of ordinary crew (if not being carried by a Half-track) and serving a purpose akin to what much smaller mortars would in other armies, 130mm Pieces are all purpose, highly effective guns that can be used for indirect and direct fire; against structures, against infantry, against tanks, and are cheap enough to be fielded in huge numbers.
IconKPA.png
DUSHKA Teams of Cyborgs carrying twin 14.5mm machine guns, DUSHKAs can suppress both whole rows of infantry as well as give aircraft a bloody nose if they decide to make the mistake of passing overhead, though even these machine men soldiers need to set down and deploy.
IconKPA.png
Net Half Track Armed with an octuple set of machine guns that can rip through infantry and punish low flying aircaft, the Net is also a useful transport.
IconKPA.png
Forge Tank The Mainstay of Red China's tank divisions is a modified and modernized Forge tank optimized for the defense with a deadly long ranged 130mm gun, armour ideal for going hull down in defensive positions, grenade launchers good at breaking up infantry charges or clearing garrisons, and the ability to dig out their own fortifications; exposing only their turrets to fire.
IconKPA.png
Tong Tank Destroyer A monster of a tank destroyer mounting a devastatingly powerful 152mm anti-tank gun with a fast firing clip autoloader, the Tong can devastate entire tank advances on their own, and can even hot load whole clips to keep up the burst rate of fire longer, but must stop lest they overload their barrels
IconKPA.png
Cauldron Mortar Tank Drowning an area in shells from its 122mm autoloaded mortar, the Cauldron may not do a great deal of damage, but it certainly makes up for it in sheer volume of fire, which when combined with its cheapness lets it reduce whole battlefields to moonscapes, or they can slather an area in Toepopper mines mixed with converted PTAB charges that can maim infantry and stop vehicles cold.
IconKPA.png
Boiler MRLS A heavier form of artillery that carries a large number of fin stabilized rockets to destroy structures or devastate incoming advances with fire released in eerie wails that earned them the nickname of "Jingwei's Orchestra". Though these venerable converted left over Kliment Voroshilov tanks are old, they can still use 107mm guns to inflict some modest damage while the armour remains quite serviceable for an artillery vehicle. Boilers can also fire special excavation rockets that burrow before exploding; producing instant trenchlines and foxholes.

Buildings

IconKPA.png
Central Bunker The castles of the scattered remains of the Red Chinese are incredibly hardy and self-sufficient structures equipped with SPAM manufacturing facilities, their own power generation abilities, even hydroponic labs to grow food in; all contained in an elaborate maze of underground facilities. Those approaching a bunker must deal with the six squads of infantry that can shelter inside and make use of fireports.
IconKPA.png
Reinfocced Foxhole Bunkers armed with a twin 30mm dual purpose autocannon turret and capable of housing two infantry squads, Reinforced foxholes literally litter the chinese landscape as part of the Socialist Republic's efforts to defend themselves. Unlike most garrisoned structures, they cannot be cleared by the likes of flamethrowers.
IconKPA.png
Pill bunker Armed with a number of twin heavy machine gun posts and four 122mm cannons (though only one can fire at any target), these prickly little bunkers are dangerous to just about any land target that enters their sight as machine gun and cannon fire rakes their positions.
IconKPA.png
SAM bunker Armed with quad 37mm chain guns and a brace of long ranged SAMs, SAM bunkers remain safe and hiddened inside their pits until they pop up to attack passing aircraft or harry infantry passing near them.
IconKPA.png
Cannon Bunker An impressive structure packing quadruple 152mm guns, the Cannon Bunker is great at slowing down the advances of whole armies at a time, chewing up the terrain with rapid firing artillery, though there's a certain point where it can only fire directly, and the guns don't have the same penetration abilities of the Pill Bunker's 122mm guns.
IconKPA.png
Stratohammer Missile Post Extremely long ranged missile posts that function as strategic artillery, these missile posts are the ultimate line of defense for the NRA's bases, tracking targets and then eliminating them with deadly guided ballistic missiles anywhere the owner can provide line of sight.

Korean Worker's Army

The forces of North Korea; extremely advanced and amazingly well trained can be called to service in minor faction death match, providing a moble reserve able to exploit the gains the defensively oriented National Revolutionary Army makes with well trained and disciplined troops.

IconKPA.png
WRK Commando Legendary graduates from the brutal North Korean special forces programs, WRK Commandos are fanatical, fast, tough, and extremely skilled. They can wipe out whole squads of infantry with their scoped, silenced particle rifles that allow them to work with stealth, and throw sticky bombs capable of disabling enemy vehicles.
IconKPA.png
WRK Shock Troopers Wearing added armor (with some aspects of battlesuits) and trained in helicopter insertion tactics while wielding particle scatter blasters, demolition charges, and more skill with a bayonet than one would even dream of being possible; these troops can deal grievous damage when they get where they shouldn't or press attacks through enemy defenses.
IconKPA.png
J-9 Ghost A marvel of modern jet technology developed in cooperation with America, the J-9 ghost is a next generation fighter with proton missiles and a tesla arc gun to use on ground or air targets as it pleases.
IconKPA.png
Hellraiser Assault Helicopter A heavy multipurpose juggernaut of a helicopter, the Hellraiser strikes with twin particle casters to rip through infantry and powerful missile launchers to pulverize vehicles and structures, but the well armored, muscular helicopter is capable of carrying entire vehicles as well as infantry to where they need to go; allowing for vitally important rapid transport
IconKPA.png
Stencil Walker Tank A different version of the North Korean Stencil Walker tank from the one used in the KWA proper, this version of the Stencil Walker Tank foregoes the charge capacitators needed to fire arcing Tesla bolts in favour of adding enough added strength to its legs to allow it to make flea jumps like smaller walkers so as to increase its mobility and the possibility to flank targets with its anti-personnel Tesla arc guns main Tesla Cannon.
IconKPA.png
Wrench Assault Gun An assault gun walker carrying a tremendously powerful proton cannon, the Wrench Assault gun can provide vital fire support to breach enemy lines, blow apart infantry formations, give pause to tanks, demolish fortifications, and with special Tesla Shells, can make sure the enemy won't be eluding the people's wrath.
